In Plain English
- Fence must have finished side facing outward toward neighboring properties or public way — The nice-looking side of your fence must face your neighbors or the street, not your own yard. So if you're installing a wood fence, put the posts and rails on your side. Sec. 17-4-0406
- Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences prohibited in residential districts — You cannot use barbed wire, razor wire, or any electric fence on your residential property. Stick to wood, vinyl, chain link, or similar materials. Sec. 17-4-0405
- Fence must be located entirely on owner's property, not on the property line or easement without permission — You can't build your fence right on the property line — it has to be fully inside your own lot. Also, check for any utility easements; you may need permission to build over them. Sec. 17-4-0402
- No fence over 3 feet in height within the sight triangle at street intersections or driveways — Near street corners and driveways, your fence can't be taller than 3 feet in the 'sight triangle' — that's the area where drivers need to see pedestrians and traffic. This keeps everyone safe. Sec. 17-4-0403-C
- 3 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence facing the street must be 3 feet max — this keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Sec. 17-4-0403-B
- 3 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence facing the street must be 3 feet max — this keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Sec. 17-4-0403-A
- 4 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence facing the street must be 3 feet max — this keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Sec. 17-4-0403-B
- 6 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence facing the street must be 3 feet max — this keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Sec. 17-4-0403-A
- Gate must lock automatically and be placed out of reach of children — Your pool gate's lock should engage by itself, and it needs to be high enough that a child can't reach it — think of a latch at least 4 feet off the ground. Sec. 13-196-080
- 4-foot minimum height, self-closing and self-latching gate, no openings greater than 4 inches — If you have a pool, the fence around it must be at least 4 feet tall, the gate must close and latch by itself, and gaps in the fence can't be wider than 4 inches. This keeps kids from squeezing through. Sec. 13-196-080
- 6 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence facing the street must be 3 feet max — this keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Sec. 17-4-0403-A
