In Plain English
- Allowed on the property line — You can build your fence right on your property line – you don't have to set it back. But be sure you know exactly where your property line is. Sec. 42-133
- Fence must have finished side facing outward (toward street or neighbors) — The nice-looking side of your fence must face your neighbors or the street – not your own yard. So the posts and rails should be on your side. Sec. 42-133
- Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences prohibited in residential districts — You cannot use barbed wire, razor wire, or electric fencing anywhere on your residential property. Stick to wood, vinyl, chain link, or similar materials. Sec. 42-133
- Located on the pool side of the gate, at least 3 inches below the top of the gate — The latch on your pool fence gate must be on the pool side (so kids can't reach it from outside) and placed at least 3 inches down from the top of the gate. Sec. 42-135
- Fence or barrier at least 4 feet high with self-closing, self-latching gate — If you have a pool, you must put a fence around it that's at least 4 feet high. The gate must close and latch on its own – no propping it open. Sec. 42-135
- No fence, wall, or obstruction over 3 feet in height within the sight triangle — At corners, you must keep the 'visibility triangle' clear – nothing higher than 3 feet. That means no tall fence or hedge blocking the view of traffic. Sec. 42-132
- Triangle formed by 25 feet along each street curb line from the intersection point — The visibility triangle is a triangle starting at the corner and going 25 feet down each street. Within that triangle, keep everything under 3 feet tall. Sec. 42-132
- 4 feet — If you live on a corner lot, the part of your fence that runs along the side street can only be 4 feet tall – same as a front yard. Sec. 42-133
